The term 'Suzani' means needlework; this beautiful craft is world-renowned and synonymous with the fabulous embroideries of Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It is pleasing to learn that ancient, highly skilled craft is resurgent. The suzani embroidery threads should be silk, using two traditional stitches, 'Basma stitch', sometimes called Bukhara couching, and less often 'chain' stitching. In either case, an unbelievable amount of time and care goes into making each piece.
This collection is really for the connoisseur. The front of the cushion is silk with hand-embroidered work, which is very finely produced in silk. Many of these cushions on the market may need to be more authentic or higher in quality and often are machine embroidered on silk or even viscose. The cushions are delicate and not designed for harsh use as the silk can easily snag; it should also be noted that in intense sunlight, silk can deteriorate. They have said that these cushions are beautiful and simply stunning. They are filled with non-allergenic fibre fill; this should be considered advantageous as feather fillings may eventually migrate through the fabric, damaging the silk. The back of the cushion is fine cotton percale.
